2006 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa
Since its founding in 1972, Caymus Vineyards has focused its attention on Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner, his wife Lorna B. Wagner and their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner had built their winery among the vines planted on the family's ranch in Rutherford, a district long recognized for producing high quality Cabernet Sauvignons. This wine includes fruit from eleven vineyards in the Napa Valley, including some exceptional Cabernet from the Calistoga area and from four Napa Valley sub-appellations: Rutherford, St. Helena, Atlas Peak and Mount Veeder. The blend includes a small amount of Merlot from the Carneros area of Napa.
2006 Mer Soleil Chardonnay
As winemaker for Mer Soleil, Charlie Wagner II becomes the fourth generation of the Wagner family to produce California wines. Chuck Wagner began developing the Mer Soleil Vineyard, located in the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation in Monterey County, in 1988. He had discovered there the combination of soil types, weather patterns and slope that he considered ideal for the complex style of Chardonnay he wanted to make, with lushly ripe fruit, balancing acidity and mouthfilling texture. Mer Soleil, on the northernmost site of this burgeoning appellation, is one of the coolest, driest vineyard sites in California.
2007 Conundrum White Table Wine
Although the name, “Caymus” has been dropped from the label, Jon Bolta continues to make the wine as he has since its debut with the 1989 vintage. The conundrum-or puzzle-of this wine's exact composition was meant to be elusive. The Chardonnay and classic Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon combination in the blend work together beyond their individual characteristics to produce rounded, tart/sweet flavors and a dense mouthfeel. Similarly, the wine's distinctive spicy-floral aroma combines aspects of the Viognier and Muscat Canelli that are essential contributors. It is marked by heightened notes of pears, honeysuckle and vanilla in its aromas, an especially lush, creamy texture, and a lemony finish that balances the wine's core flavors of tropical fruits, peach/apricot and green melon.
